This patch is based off of obscure Cossack service badges awarded over the course of the Russian Civil War. These bands of nomadic warriors fought on every side over the course of the Revolution, thus this patch is dedicated to all who lost their lives in one of the most devastating wars in history.
Many of these badges incorporated Orthodox Christian imagery, with fatalistic motifs reminding awardees of their mortality and the costs involved incurred by war. This particular design incorporates the crown of thorns, the crown of Christ's crucifixion.
